The Year is 1994, Anne Lamott has decided to write a book to help people with their writing and with their life. It is now 2009, unfortunately Anne Lamott did not know in 1994 that by now everyone would be speaking in robot voices and would not require help with writing or living. Instead in 2009, we are… robots.

Sorry couldn’t resist.

I would never try to convince you or anyone that I am a writer or am really aspiring to be one. I think I’ve more or less hammered it home that I’m doing this for me. Obviously, I like that you take the time to read what I have to say but in the end it is my outlet. That being said, Anne Lamott’s book Bird by Bird serves as an instructional guide for aspiring writers. But, it’s not only for writers, it’s also for aspiring livers (not livers as in your organ that detoxifies, but livers as in people who want to live fulfilling lives).

The ever incredible Jennifer suggested this book to meĀ and I give her a heartfelt thank you for sharing with me what she described as one of her favorite books. Oddly enough we also had a discussion on how we treat our books, she is of the mindset where it is ok to write in your books where as I am of the mindset that I want to keep mine as pristine as possible, to each their own. Anyways, Lamott treats readers to something rather unique in her book. It’s full of humor, writing lessons and life lessons.

I had original almost thought this book was going to be about as thrilling as Eat, Pray, Love (Jennifer, no offense intended). I was, as I mentioned, very much so mistaken. In fact this is one of those books that if you enjoyed it once you’ll most likely return to it at some point during your life and read it again. I can honestly say that I don’t think I’ll read it again, but I can certainly understand why people would.

Lamott has a most interesting perspective on writing and would not be at all surprised to hear that this book is commonly used in writing courses around the country. She really does delve into every area that one could imagine when it comes to attempting to be a world class writer, jealousy, publishing, drafts and knowing when you’re done. Writer or not, this book may be worth your time.
